    Does fasting to lose weight causes you to lose muscle?

    No, it does not according to a new book called The Complete Guide to Fasting: Heal Your Body Through Intermittent, Alternate-Day, and Extended Fasting by Jason Fung, MD and Jimmie Moore.

    “Alternate-day fasting over seventy days decreased body weight by 6 percent, but fat mass decreased by 11.4 percent and lean mass (muscle and bone) did not change at all,” Dr. Fung writes.

    “The normal protein breakdown of around seventy-five [75] grams per day falls to fifteen to twenty [15-20] grams per day during fasting.

    “Rather than burning muscle during fasting, we start conserving muscle.

    “Much of the amino acids that are broken down during regular turnover of cells are reabsorbed into new proteins.”

    If someone fasts for a day, will they eat twice as much the next day?

    Studies show that people eat roughly an extra 500 calories on the day after a fast, but not nearly enough to make up for the calories lost on the day where people consume no calories Dr. Fung notes.

    Does fasting reduce metabolism? No, notes Jason Fung, MD

    You might think that fasting to lose weight would cause a drop in metabolism—I certainly assumed that it would—but this is not true according to a new, very interesting book called The Complete Guide to Fasting: Heal Your Body Through Intermittent, Alternate-Day, and Extended Fasting by Jason Fung, MD and Jimmie Moore.

    Fasting does not reduce basal metabolism.

    In fact, one study suggests that the exact opposite happens.

    4 days of continuous fasting increased metabolism by 12%

    They noted that one study found that four (4) days of continuous fasting increased basal metabolism by 12 percent.

    Dr. Fung explains why this is.

    EVERY OTHER DAY MODIFIED FAST

    Limiting intake to 500 calories every other day caused weight loss of 11.4 lbs in 3 months

    Having people limit their calorie intake to 500 calories every other day, which is 25% of their calorie needs, and allowing them to eat as much as they wanted to on the other days, caused them to lose an average of 11.4 lbs in 3 months, dropping from an average of 169 lbs to 158 lbs, according to a study by Krista Varady, PhD from the University of Illinois in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

    Krista Varady, PhD has noted that their research has found that eating 25% of calories every other day (roughly 500 calories every other day) works BETTER than eating 0% of calories—eating NO calories on the “fasting” day—and better than eating 50% or 75% of calories every other day.

    They have found that compliance with this type of diet—limiting intake to 500 calories per day (25% of your calorie needs)—is MUCH higher than when people are told to eat NO calories on the “fasting” day.

    They have also found that eating 500 calories every other day causes most of the weight loss to be fat, and preserves muscle.

    Those who preloaded with water three (3) times a day lost an average of 9.5 lbs compared to only 1.8 lbs for those who preloaded with water only once a day or none at all.

    Resting metabolism dropped 11% in women who lost 11%

    Resting metabolism dropped by 11 percent in women who lost 11 percent of their body according to a study from the Institute of Medicine in Toulouse, France.

    This decrease in metabolism was maintained after the women's weight stabilized.

    The women lost an average of 22 pounds, dropping from 195 pounds to 173 pounds.

    Resting metabolism dropped by 267 calories per day, from 1690 calories to 1423 calories per day.

    Resting metabolism slows by 25 calories per day for every 2.2 pounds that is lost from weight loss due to liposuction surgery according to a 2009 paper by Eric Doucet and A. Schwartz from the University of Ottawa in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

    This may be because body fat releases leptin, a hormone which decreases appetite and increases metabolism, therefore, by removing fat cells, liposuction may decrease leptin levels, and thus, decrease resting metabolism.

    Studies have shown that giving leptin injections "reverse the effects of weight loss on resting [metabolism]," the paper notes.

    2.2 lbs weight loss increases appetite by 100 calories per day, long-term weight loss difficult

    Every one kilogram (2.2 lbs) that a person loses, appetite increases by roughly 100 calories per day making long-term weight loss difficult according to a new study from researchers at the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

    The chart below from the paper shows that while patients lost very roughly 3.5 kg (7.7 lbs), their appetite increased by roughly 350 calories per day.

    MEDITERRANEAN DIET

    Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil reduces death by 18% over 4.8 years

    People at high risk of cardiovascular disease, but with no cardiovascular disease at enrollment, who were randomly assigned to eat a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil were 18% less likely to die during an average follow-up of 4.8 years compared to people assigned to the control group who were recommended to eat less fat, although the difference was not statistically significant.

    There was an 85% chance that the difference was due to the differences in diet, and a 15% chance that the difference was due to random chance.

    (It’s good enough for me.)

    Study: People consuming the most red meat were 21% more likely to die

    The one-fifth of people consuming the most red meat were 21% more likely to have died compared with the one-fifth of people consuming the least amount of red meat according to a new study from Sweden.

    This included a 29% greater risk of dying from cardiovascular disease but no increased risk of dying from cancer (0% increased risk).

    Results were similar regardless of whether people ate a high, medium or low amount of fruits and vegetables.
