Chitosan, a dietary supplement which is derived from the exoskeleton of shrimp and other crustaceans, causes an average weight loss of 3.8 lbs according to a recent review of 15 studies that last a month or more.

Chitosan: Research suggests it is not effective for weight loss
Last week I reviewed a study which found that 3 grams per day of the fiber supplement chitosan is not effective for weight loss. Dr. Lu Jason from Taiwan commented that maybe a larger dose, perhaps 9 or 12 grams, might be effective. Here is some additional information about chitosan.

Chitosan for 6 months does not cause weight loss
People given three grams of chitosan per day for six months lost an average of 0.9 pounds compared to a weight gain of 0.4 pounds for those given a placebo according to a new study from New Zealand. This difference was not statistically significant.
