The prevelance of obesity in U.S. adults is lower among those with more than a high school education compared to those with a high school education or less: 29 percent versus 34 percent.

PREVELANCE OF MORBID OBESITY
BMI of 40 or more increased by 50% in the past 5 years; BMI of 50 or more increased by 75%
The prevelance of severe obesity, that is having a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more which is roughly being 100 pounds overweight, and that of morbid obesity, that is having a BMI of 50 or more which is roughly being 175 pounds or more overweight, has increased faster than that of any other weight group according to a new study from the RAND corporation.

INCREASE IN OBESITY
Overweight in U.S. men and women has roughly doubled in the last 50 years
The incidence of overweight among U.S. men and women has roughly doubled in the last 50 years according to a study of 6798 people from the Framingham study. The incidence of overweight among men in this group increased from 21.8 percent in the 1950’s to 35.2 percent in the 1990’s. Among women in this group, the incidence of overweight increased from 15 percent in the 1950’s to 33.1 percent in the 1990’s.

Obesity in U.S. men and women has roughly tripled in the last 50 years
The incidence of obesity among U.S. men and women has roughly tripled in the last 50 years according to a study of 6798 people from the famous Framingham study. The incidence of obesity among men in this group increased from 5.8 percent in the 1950's to 14.8 percent in the 1990's. Among women in this group, the incidence of obesity increased from 3.9 percent in the 1950's to 14 percent in the 1990's.

U.S. OBESITY
66.3% of U.S. adults overweight, 32.2% obese, up from 64.5% and 30.5% in 1999-2000
The prevelance of overweight in U.S. adults 20-years-old and older increased from 64.5 percent in 1999-2000 to 66.3 percent in 2003-2004. Obesity among U.S. adults increased from 30.5 percent to 32.2 percent for the same time periods. Extreme obesity increased in women from 6.3 percent to 6.9 percent, but decreased in men from 3.1 percent to 2.8 percent.

OBESITY STATISTICS
Two-thirds of US adults overweight, one-third obese
Sixty-four percent (64%) of the U.S. adult population 20- to 74-years-old is overweight, that is has a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or more, which is an estimated 130 million, while thirty percent (30%) are obese as was pointed out in a new paper on sugar intake and weight gain.

The prevelance of obesity among U.S. adults is roughly 30 percent among white adults, 45 percent among black adults and 36.8 percent among Hispanic adults according to a paper from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
