Type 2 diabetics given once-a-week Byetta injections lose 8.4 lbs in four months
Type 2 diabetics who were injected once-a-week with with 2 mg of long-acting release Byetta lost an average of 8.4 pounds after 3.75 months (15 weeks) according to a recent study from researchers at Amylin Pharmaceuticals, the makers of the drug. Patients given a dose of 0.8 mg once a week or a placebo did not lose weight. The long-acting release formula is under development by Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in San Diego, California, USA.

Byetta (exenatide) causes weight loss of 10-20 lbs notes Alan Schulman, MD
The diabetes drug Byetta (exenatide), which is given twice a day by subcutaneous injection -- under the skin -- causes a 4-5 pound weight loss after five months, and a weight loss of about 11 pounds after two years according to an email I received from weight loss specialist Alan N. Schulman, MD of Rockville, Maryland. However, he said that an endocrinologist -- hormone specialist -- told him that he is routinely seeing weight loss of 10-20 pounds with the drug in his patients who in addition get "standard endocrinology practice medications", for diabetes, I assume, and "dietician counseling" for diabetes, I assume. The anti-diabetes drug Byetta (exenatide) causes an average weight loss of as much as 6.2 pounds in diabetics according to another review paper about the drug. The recommended dose is 5 to 10 mcg twice a day injected subcutaneously -- under the skin -- before breakfast and dinner. The most common side effects are nausea, affecting 44 percent, vomiting (13 percent), diarrhea (13 percent), and hypoglycemia -- low blood sugar -- affecting 5-36 percent.
