Men lose 5.3 pounds in three months drinking oolong tea

Men drinking one bottle of oolong tea per day lost an average of 5.3 pounds in three months compared to 2.9 pounds for men in the control group according to a study from Japan. Body fat decreased by 3.1 lbs vs 2.4 lbs
Body fat decreased by an average of 3.1 pounds for men in the oolong tea group compared to 2.4 pounds for those in the control group.
Oolong tea reduces risk factor for heart disease
The oolong tea also reduced a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, known as malondialdehyde-modified LDL cholesterol, by 36 percent from 193 U per liter to 123 U per liter compared to a decrease of 15 percent in the control group (from 158 U per liter to 134 U per liter).
Oolong tea is partially fermented green tea
Oolong tea is green tea that has been partially fermented (oxidized).

Total catechin content: 690 mg vs 22 mg
The beneficial compounds in tea are a type of polyphenol known as catechins.
The oolong tea group consumed 690 mg of catechins per day from the oolong tea compared to 22 mg for the control group.
The normal catechin intake from tea consumption in Japan is 200 to 400 mg per day. This is the amount from tea from roughly 2 grams of tea leaves per day.
The amount of caffeine was the same for both groups at 23 mg per day.
Subjects: 35 normal to overweight men
The study involved 17 men in the oolong tea group and 18 men in the control group.
The men were 24- to 46-years-old, and were normal to overweight.
Conclusion: Green or oolong tea reduce body fat
“In conclusion, long-term consumption of beverages containing catechins [such as green or oolong tea reduce] a risk factor for developing arteriosclerosis. Moreover, catechin intake decreases body fat,” the authors of the study concluded.
“These results suggest that catechins contribute to the prevention of and improvement in various lifestyle-related diseases, particularly obesity.”

Comment: Oolong tea appears more effective than green tea
The research suggests to me that even though oolong tea is more effective for weight loss and fat loss than green tea even though oolong tea has only about half the amount of catechins as green tea.
It appears this is because of some compounds that are created during the processing of oolong tea.
