Glucomannan comes from the Japanese konjac root, scientifically classified as Amorphophallus konjac.
Part of Japanese diet for 1,000 years
It has been a part of Japanese diet for more than 1,000 years.
Fiber reduces calories absorbed by 30-180 calories per day
Some fiber supplements—and I assume that glucomannan is one of them—can reduce the number of calories absorbed by 30 to 180 calories per day according to Bjorntorp and Brodoff (1992).
Glucomannan expands 200 times when combined with water
Glucomannan has 5 to 8 times the thickening power of starch and expands some 200 times its original volume when combined with water.
3,000 mg will absorb 10 ounces of water
A dose of 3 grams of glucomannan (3,000 mg) will absorb approximately 10 ounces of water.
Glucomannan lowers cholesterol and insulin
Glucomannan lowers cholesterol levels and insulin levels when taken before a meal.
Glucomannan may lower blood sugar
Glucomannan may also lower blood sugar levels, however, not all studies agree.
More fiber equals lower body weight
A number of studies have found an association between a higher fiber intake and lower body weight.
Lean people eat 50% more fiber
One study found that lean people eat 50 percent more fiber than obese people (Alfieri, 1995).
More fiber equals 7-8 lbs less body weight
Another study found that fiber intake was associated with an 7 to 8 pound difference in body weight after adjusting for protein and carbohydrate intake (Ludwig, 1999).
