    High-carbohydrate, low-calorie-dense diet causes weight loss of 8.8 pounds

    Patients following a high-carbohydrate, low-calorie-dense diet lost an average of 8.8 pounds according to a study from the University of Alabama at Birmingham EatRight Weight Management Program. Weight Maintenance

    Weight Maintenance : Regained only 1 lbs in two years

    The diet also was very successful at helping patients to maintain their weight loss.

    After an average of 2.2 years, patients maintained an average weight loss of 7.5 pounds, having regained only 1.3 pounds.

    Three-fourths regained less than 5%

    Three-fourths of patients (78 percent) regained less than 5 percent of their body weight.


    Weight Regain

    Half regained no weight

    Nearly half (46 percent) regained no weight or continued to lose weight.


    Calorie Intake

    Calorie intake of maintainers vs gainers : 1608 vs 1989

    The average calorie intake for those who maintained their weight loss was 1608 calories per day versus 1989 for those who regained at 5 percent or more of their body weight.

    “Our results indicate that low-energy-density eating habits are associated with long-term weight maintenance,” the authors concluded.

    “Those who maintain weight after the EatRight program consume a low-energy-density dietary pattern and smaller portions of food groups potentially high in energy density than those who regain weight.”



    Comments : Low calorie dense foods is key to maintaining weight

    I believe that eating low calorie dense foods is key to maintaining your weight.

    It seems to me that it is not feasible for people to limit the amount of food that they eat on a long-term basis, therefore, the only way to limit calorie intake is to eat plenty of low calorie dense foods such as fiber-rich fruits and vegetables.
