DIET SHAKES AND NUTRITION BARS can increase weight loss and improve weight maintenance according to a recent study.
One hundred obese men and women ages 22 to 69 were assigned to eat a diet of 1200 to 1500 calories per day. For the first 3 months half were randomly chosen to replace two of their meals and two of their snacks with diet shakes and nutrition bars while the other half ate regular meals.
Those patients using the diet shakes and nutrition bars lost considerably more weight than those eating regular meals (15.8 lbs vs 2.9 lbs, respectively).
After the initial 3 months both groups replaced one meal and one snack with a diet shake and nutrition bar and ate the same diet.
After 2 years both groups had lost additional weight with the average being 22.2 lbs and 11.7 lbs, respectively.
The study was sponsored by Slim-Fast. It seems likely that home-made diet shakes made with whey protein powder, soy protein powder, or even non-fat-milk powder are likely to work just as well as Slim-Fast.
