Diabetic patients who took Meridia (sibutramine) in addition to giving themselves subcutaneous injections of Symlin (pramlintide), as well as diet, exercise and lifestyle changes, lost an average of 23.9 lbs in six months versus 4.6 lbs in those given injections of a placebo, a difference of 19.3 lbs according to a new study from the makers of Symlin (pramlintide). Subjects

Subjects: 61 patients in the Symlin (pramlintide) group; 59 in the Symlin (pramlintide) plus Meridia (sibutramine) group

The study involved 61 patients in the Symlin (pramlintide) group, and 59 in the Symlin (pramlintide) plus Meridia (sibutramine) group.

Most of the subjects were women—7 men and 54 women in the Symlin (pramlintide) group; 6 men and 53 women in the Symlin (pramlintide) plus Meridia (sibutramine) group.

    Weight Loss

Body Weight: 235 lbs in Symlin (pramlintide) group; 224 lbs in placebo group

Body weight dropped from an average of 235 lbs to 227 lbs after six months in the Symlin (pramlintide) group, a weight loss of 7.9 lbs, from 224 lbs to 219 lbs in the placebo group, a weight loss of 4.6 lbs, and from an average of 222 lbs to 198 lbs in the Symlin (pramlintide) plus Meridia (sibutramine) group, a loss of 23.9 lbs.

The weight loss represented 3.7% of body weight in the Symlin (pramlintide) group vs 2.2% in placebo group vs 11.1% in Symlin (pramlintide) plus Meridia (sibutramine) group.

    Dose

Dose: 120 μg injections of Symlin (pramlintide) three times per day, 10 mg of Meridia (sibutramine) in the morning

The dose of Symlin (pramlintide) used was 120 μg subcutaneous injections three times per day.

The dose of Meridia (sibutramine) was 10 mg taken orally in the morning.

    Adverse Effects of

Adverse effects: Nausea was the most common side effect of Symlin (pramlintide), occurring in roughly one-third of patients

Nausea was the most common side effect of Symlin (pramlintide), occurring in roughly 23% to 34% of patients in each group.

Those who experienced nausea from the Symlin (pramlintide) lost less weight than those who did not experience nausea.

Therefore, nausea was not responsible for the weight loss.

Headache was also more common in those given Symlin (pramlintide), occurring in 16 patients in the Symlin (pramlintide) group vs 5 patients in the placebo group.

Anxiety and depression were slightly more common in those given Symlin (pramlintide) compared to placebo.

5.5% given Symlin (pramlintide) reported anxiety versus 4.3% in the placebo group.

5.2% given Symlin (pramlintide) reported depression versus 3.1% in the placebo group.

Conflict of Interest for the Authors

4 of 5 authors work for, or have worked for the company and own the companies stock; 5 author has been paid by numerous drug companies

All of the authors of the study have financial conflicts of interest.

(This is true of nearly ALL drug studies today. Nearly all researching doing drug research and writing papers have been paid by the drug company or multiple drug companies. Therefore, it is safest to assume that they are presenting all of the data in as favorable light as possible.)

Four of the five authors are employees of the company, or were employes of the company, and own stock in the company.

The fifth author has been paid by numerous drug companies and has served as a consultant for the maker of Symlin (pramlintide), Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

    Comment

Comment: I would NOT recommend anyone use this drug combination for weight loss unless you are already taking Symlin (pramlintide)

I would NOT recommend that people use this drug combination for weight loss unless you are already taking Symlin (pramlintide).

Notice that they did not report weight loss for people taking phentermine alone or Meridia (sibutramine) alone.

Giving Symlin (pramlintide) alone only increased weight loss by 3.3 lbs more than placebo, therefore, Merida (sibutramine) or phentermine was responsible for the overwhelming majority of the weight loss.

Do not be fooled into thinking that this is a magic combination of drugs for weight loss. It is not.

The drug manufacture is simply trying to piggyback themselves onto the effectiveness of phentermine or Merida (sibutramine) in this study.

For Type 2 diabetics who need to lose weight and want to try a diet pill, they should try phentermine alone first.

Phentermine Alone Caused Weight Loss of 22 lbs

1984 study found phentermine alone caused weight loss of 22 lbs vs 8.8 lbs with placebo

This 1984 study found that phentermine alone caused a weight loss of 22 lbs vs 8.8 lbs with a placebo.

So if you want to try a diet drug, try phentermine first.

If you ask any weight loss doctors with lots of experience, they will also tell you that phentermine is more effective than Merida (sibutramine).

My guess is that phentermine is probably safer than Merida (sibutramine) as well.

I say this because phentermine forces the release of noradrenaline, which occurs naturally under numerous circumstances, so they body knows how to handle it, however, Merida (sibutramine) blocks reuptake of noradrenaline, which does not occur naturally.
