“I began to realize how pervasive this problem was in my pain patients. [People who have normal thyroid blood tests (TSH levels), but still have hypothyroidism based on their symptoms],” Mark Starr, MD notes in this audio clip from a speech he gave at a 2007 Orthomolecular Conference.
“[Out of 162 of his pain patients whose TSH levels were normal, indicating normal thyroid, I found that]...”
- “96% had pain...”
- “84% had dry skin...”
- “82% [had] fatigue,
- brittle nails...
- menstrual problems...
- depression was present in over half of my pain patients...
- moderate to marked myxedema [in] 54%... [puffiness of the skin]”.
Dr. Starr has defined this as Type 2 Hypothyroidism, where TSH levels are normal, but people still have hypothyroidism that requires treatment with natural desiccated thyroid.
Natural Desiccated Thyroid vs Synthroid (T4)
Dr. Starr shows that Natural Desiccated Thyroid is VASTLY SUPERIOR to Synthroid (T4)
In this audio clip, Dr. Starr also shows that Natural Desiccated Thyroid is VASTLY SUPERIOR to Synthroid (T4).
In fact, he shows that symptoms of hypothyroidism WERE NO BETTER in people on Synthroid (T4) than people taking no thyroid at all!
“I began to realize how pervasive this problem was in my pain patients. [People who have normal blood tests (TSH), but still have hypothyroidism,” Mark Starr, MD notes.
“After I realize that, in about 1998 I started doing Basal Metabolism (BMR) tests on my patients…
“I warn people not to use some of the newer Basal Metabolism tests because…
“I wasted some time and patient’s money…”
“You can run up some stairs and put one of these head pieces on and take a metabolism, but it won’t be accurate because you have to get a good night’s sleep and fasting and well-rested.”
“They used to make people stay overnight at the hospital.”
“So 50 patients with normal TSH levels [which we have falsely been led to believe means a patient’s thyroid is fine] consecutive patients, pain patients underwent the traditional BMR testing (basal metabolism rate)...”
“The average basal metabolism was at least 14% below normal.”
“Historically, more than 10% below normal was indicative [of low thyroid] when coupled with the symptoms [of low thyroid].”
“This is 162 chart reviews.”
“I started at the beginning of the alphabet.”
“[Out of these 162 patients]...”
“96% had pain…”
“84% had dry skin…”
“82% [had] fatigue,
depression was present in over half of my pain patients…
moderate to marked myxedema [in] 54%... [puffiness of the skin]”
Dr. Starr has posted pictures of marked myxedema can be seen here
“... It is around 60%... patients who have overt myxedema.”
[In other words, myxedema is NOT necessary for low thyroid.]
“There are a lot of slender patients, like I was, who have the problem [of low thyroid] as well.”
“Out of those 162 patients I yanked out the patients who were already taking Synthroid [synthetic T4] who had already been diagnosed with hypothyroidism…”
“The average dose was 0.1 to 0.2 mg [100 to 200 mcg] of T4 [Synthroid]...”
“The dry skin, fatigue, brittle nails, menstrual problems, cold intolerance this is exactly a mirror image… maybe slight higher [worse]... than patients who were not taking thyroid.”
“[In other words, Synthroid [T4] did NOT improve symptoms of low thyroid at all!]”

Quotes about Dr. Starrs book
“I believe everyone needs to review Mark Starrs book.
“He has a vital message to share about the many people who do not realize they have low thyroid, because standard thyroid tests do not show it.
“Mark Starrs dedication to research, and his devoted study with the old masters, have made him an international expert on thyroid and iodine.”
—Dr. Garry Gordon, Co-Founder of the American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM)
“This is an astonishing book revealing the cause and successful treatment for obesity, heart attacks, depression, diabetes, strokes, headaches, chronic fatigue and many more. His in-depth research and discussion of how environmental toxins can interfere with thyroid hormones is groundbreaking and enlightening for us all.”
—Robban Sica, MD
“This is the most significant compilation of medical research ever published in the area of hypothyroidism.
“Over a century of irrefutable scientific evidence is presented in a concise and readable format for laypeople and doctors alike.”
—Mark Starr, MD writing about his own book
