People given 7.5 mg of phentermine plus 46 mg of Topamax (topiramate) lost an average of 17.8 pounds in one year versus a weight loss of 3.1 pounds in those given a placebo according to a new study from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, USA.
The weight loss represented 7.8 percent of body weight for the drug group versus 1.2 percent for the placebo group. Weight Loss for Completers
Weight loss for subjects who completed the one-year study:
The average weight loss for those who completed the entire one-year study was 28.4 pounds which was 12.4 percent of body weight for those given given 15 mg of phentermine plus 92 mg of Topamax (topiramate) versus a weight loss of 4 pounds or 1.6 percent of body weight for those given the placebo.
Subjects
Subjects: 2487 overweight and obese patients
The study wad done at 93 centers in the US and involved 2487 overweight and obese patients who were 18- to 70-years-old, with an average age of 51.
Seventy percent (70%) of subjects were women.
- 994 were assigned to placebo
- 498 were given 7.5 mg of phentermine plus 46 mg of topiramate (Topamax)
- 995 were given 15 mg of phentermine plus 92 mg of topiramate (Topamax)
Body Weight
Average body weight: 226 lbs; BMI 36-37
The average body weight of the subjects was 226 pounds.
The average body mass index (BMI) was 36-37.
