Women assigned to diet-only lost an average of 8.5% after one year, losing an average of 15.6 lbs, dropping from roughly 185 lbs down to 169 lbs according to a recent study from the U.S.
Diet
Diet of 1200 to 2000 calories per day, less than 30% of calories as fat
The diets ranged from 1200 to 2000 calories per day based on the women’s baseline body weight.
They were also told to eat a diet containing less than 30% of calories as fat.
Subjects
Subjects: 439 overweight-to-obese postmenopausal sedentary women assigned to one of four groups
The study involved 439 overweight-to-obese postmenopausal sedentary women who were assigned to one of four groups: diet alone, exercise alone, diet plus exercise, or the control group.
Average Body Weight
Average starting body weight 184 lbs, 48% body fat, BMI 30.8
On average, the women were 58-years-old, weighed 184 lbs, had a body mass index (BMI) of 30.8 (obese), and had 48% body fat.
Conclusion
Conclusion: Diet plus exercise causes the most weight loss
“Among postmenopausal women, lifestyle-change involving diet, exercise, or both combined over 1 year improves body weight and adiposity, with the greatest change arising from the combined intervention,” the authors of the study concluded.
