"We have created a toxic [food] environment," that is damaging our mitochondria and is making us sick, notes Robert Lustig, MD, pediatric endocrinoligist from the University of California, San Francisco in the 7-part video series called “The Skinny on Obesity” (Episode 2).

However, the toxic environment Lustig is talking about is different than what Brownell refers to
“Kelly Brownell at Yale University first coined the term ‘The Toxic Environment’ in his book ‘Food Fight’,” Lustig notes.
But he notes that Brownell is talking about the toxic environment being that food is available everywhere, all the time, but Lustig notes that he is talking about something different than what Kelly Brownell was talking about.

Lustig’s Toxic Environment is the increase in sugar intake in the past 30 years which damages mitochondria and makes us sick
“What we are talking about here when we are talking about the toxic environment is real toxins, real poisons, things that actually damage your mitochondria and make you sick.”
“This is about something that we are exposed to that is going on worldwide that has changed in 30 years, and there is only one thing that has, and it is sugar,” says Lustig.
