People put on a restricted, normal-food diet containing 1500-1800 calories per day depending on body size and exercise levels lost an average of 15.4 lbs after one year according to a new study from Sweden.

This weight loss was 8.3% of their original body weight.

The restricted normal-food diet consisted mainly of food with high-protein, low-glycemic-index carbohydrates, low-fat intake, low-energy density, and a high-fiber content, providing a caloric intake of 1500-1800 calories per day depending on body size and exercise levels.

    Weight Maintenance Phase

Weight loss phase for 2-3 months followed by 9 months of weight maintenance

“After the weight-loss phase, all 3 groups entered the same 9-month weight-maintenance program, which included an exercise program (circuit training, with a mix of aerobic and strength- training workout stations, at the center 2–3 times per week for 30 to 45 min; physically active transport to and from work; and use of a Yamax SW-200 pedometer to encourage walking), dietary advice, and behavioral changes,” the paper notes.

“Dietary advice included the use of restricted portions sizes and consumption of a diet rich in protein, with a low glycemic index, and with a low overall en- ergy density (eg, consumption of vegetables and water as opposed to caloric beverages).”

    Subjects: 676 people

The study included 676 obese people with an average body mass index (BMI) of 29 and an average age of 51-years-old.

Eighty-six percent (81%) were women, and 19% were men.

Dropouts: 26% dropped out of the study

Only 26% of the subjects dropped out of the one-year study before completion.
