Sugar-sweetened beverages cause 184,000 deaths worldwide each year according to a recent analysis:
- 133,000 deaths per year from diabetes.
- 45,000 deaths per year from cardiovascular disease.
- 6,450 deaths per year from cancer.
Conclusion: Sugar-sweetened beverages impact preventable deaths
“[Sugar-sweetened beverages], are a single, modifiable component of diet, that can impact preventable death/disability in adults in high, middle, and low-income countries, indicating an urgent need for strong global prevention programs,” the authors of the paper concluded.
