Women on the portion-controlled diet lost 12.3 lbs in 2 months vs 7.9 lbs when counting calories

Women eating portion-controlled diets lost more weight than women on a diet that was not portion-controlled even though both were supposed to eat the same number of calories according to a recent study. Women on the portion-controlled diet lost 12.3 pounds in two months compared to 7.9 pounds for women following a non-portion-controlled diet. Study Design
Portion-controlled group ate two frozen entrees daily
The women in the portion-controlled group ate two frozen entrees daily, plus additional food servings from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Guide Pyramid.
The self-selected diet group consumed a recommended number of servings from the USDA’s Food Guide Pyramid.
Diet Composition: 55% carbs, 25% protein, 20% fat
Both diets were designed to be the same in composition—55 percent carbohydrate, 25 percent protein, 20 percent fat—and contain 1365 calories.
Women on the portion-controlled diet lost more weight, more fat, had a greater reduction in total cholesterol and greater reduction in fasting insulin.
Weight Loss: 12.3 lbs vs 7.9 lbs
Women on the portion-controlled diet lost more weight: 12.3 pounds versus 7.9 pounds.
Fat Loss:7.9 lbs vs 5.1 lbs
Women on the portion-controlled diet lost more body fat: 7.9 pounds of body fat versus 5.1 pounds.
Cholesterol: -24 mg/dl vs -13 mg/dl
Women on the portion-controlled diet had a greater reduction in total cholesterol: 24 mg/dL or 12 percent compared to 13 mg/dL or 7 percent in the self-selected diet group.
Insulin: -1.8 micro U/mL vs -0.3 micro U/mL
Women on the portion-controlled diet also had a greater reduction in fasting insulin levels: 1.8 micro U/mL versus 0.3 micro U/mL.
Subjects: 60 overweight or obese women
The study included 60 healthy overweight or obese women (BMI 26 to 40) who were 24- to 60-years-old).
Conclusion: Portion control is important for losing weight
“Accurate portion control is an important factor in weight loss success, and use of packaged entrees is an effective method of achieving this,” the authors of the study concluded.
“Consumption of portion-controlled entrees resulted in greater losses of weight and fat, thereby reducing cardiovascular disease risk.”
