    Every 2% higher intake of trans fats associated with 16% greater risk of death over 26-32 years

    Every 2% higher intake of trans fats was associated with a 16% greater risk of death over the next 26-32 years according to a study from researchers at Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

    Foods Containing Trans Fats

    Trans fats are found in high amounts in foods that contain partially hydrogenated oils such as cakes, pies and piecrust, cookies especially with frosting, biscuits, breakfast sandwiches, margarine, crackers, microwave popcorn, cream-filled candies, doughnuts, fried fast foods, frozen pizza, french fries, anything fried or battered, shortening, cake mixes and frostings, pancakes and waffles, nondairy creamers, frozen or creamy beverages, peanut butter made with partially hydrogenated oils, meat sticks such as Slim Jims, crackers, frozen dinners, canned chili, packaged pudding.

    Potato chips, corn chips and tortilla chips, if made with partially hydrogenated oils, contain trans fats also.

    Subjects

    Subjects: 83,349 women followed for 22 years, 42,884 men followed for 26 years

    The study investigated 83,349 women from the Nurses’ Health Study (July 1, 1980, to June 30, 2012) and 42,884 men from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (February 1, 1986, to January 31, 2012) who were free of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and types 1 and 2 diabetes at baseline.

    Conclusion

    “These findings support current dietary recommendations to replace saturated fat and trans-fat with unsaturated fats,” the authors of the study concluded.
