Sustained-release diethylpropion (75 mg per day) caused more weight loss than a placebo in a four month double-blind, crossover study by Carney and Tweddell, 1975)
For the first two months those taking diethylpropion lost nearly twice as much as those taking placebo (11.1 pounds versus 6.2 pounds, respectively).
During the second two months those switching from drug to placebo lost 1.5 pounds compared to 6.7 pounds in those switching from placebo to drug.
A total of 102 patients completed the study.
Three patients taking diethylpropion gained weight compared to 6 taking placebo.
The range of weight changes with diethylpropion was -26 pounds to +4 pounds compared to placebo at -32 pounds to +12 pounds.
