I have always been a thin woman. I have always weighed 120lbs to 130lbs, I am 5 foot 3 inches. I started taking Seroquel six weeks ago and I thought there was something wrong with me because I have gained 15lbs. I was thinking to myself I would rather be dead then be fat. So I got on the computer and found this articale. I feel better knowing that it is not me. I am going to stop taking this medication because I will not be fat.
Sincerely,
Starla Lee

Abilify (aripiprazole) was found to cause an average weight lost of about 3 pounds in six months according to one study. You might ask your doctor if this drug that is appropriate for your condition.
Unfortunately, a lot of the antipsychotic drugs seem to cause weight gain.
Although I have not studied this in-depth, the reason seems to be that in general, antipsychotic drugs work by blocking both serotonin and dopamine, which increases appetite and therefore cause weight gain.

I have struggled with eating disorders since I was 13 , I am now 37 and have been seeing an eating disorder specialist/psychiatrist for four years. I was presecribed Seroquel by this /eating disorder specialist/psychiatrist and quickly gained 15lbs. (in two months) the entire time I was questioning my eating disorder specialist about the weight gain and was told repetively that Seroquel was weight neutral. I adjusted my diet to 600-800 calories a day and continued to gain weight and continued to be told that I was the only person who had a weight gain side effect. I have been off the medication for two months and have increased exercise and modified eating habits and have been unable to lose the lbs. I am angry and feel my trust has been betrayed. I will be printing this article for my psychiatrist along with the numerous others documenting weight gain with Seroquel. Thank you for writing it.

Cheryl,
I would be glad to email you a copy of a medical journal article which talks about Seroquel-induced weight gain that you can show to your doctor.
I don't have a copy of the paper referenced above, but I can send you another paper which talks about it.
The paper I have is:
Wetterling T. Bodyweight gain with atypical antipsychotics. a comparative review. Drug Saf. 2001 Jan, 24(1):59-73.
If you would like a copy of this paper to give to your doctor, email me directly at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), and I'll send it to you.
