People lost a similar amount of weight eating chicken as the primary protein source, while participating in a fitness walking program, as compared to beef according to a study from the Dr. Jim Rippe's Lifestyle Institute in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.

People eating chicken lost 13.2 pounds in three months compared to 12.3 pounds for those eating beef.

Both groups lost a similar amount of body fat, and had similar reductions in total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol.

HDL cholesterol did not change significantly in either group.

The women were instructed to follow a diet that was 500 calories per day below their needs, and were randomly assigned to consume either chicken or beef as their primary protein source, while following a fitness walking program.

The study involved sixty-one sedentary non-smoking women who, on average, were 43-years-old, and had a body mass index (BMI) of 32.

“Weight loss and improved lipid profile can be accomplished through diet and exercise, whether the dietary protein source is lean beef or chicken,” the authors of the study concluded.
