According to the Nurses Cohort Study from the US, female nurses who were overweight, that is had a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or more, increased the risk of type 2 diabetes 5-fold, while having a BMI of 35 or more, severe obesity, increased the risk 93-fold notes the report Storing Up Problems: The Medical Case for a Slimmer Nation by the Royal College of Physicians. They note that this could help to explain why poor people are more likely to be obese in developed countries. REFERENCE
