Birth weights have been increasing over the past 25 years, and so has the number of mothers who gain a large amount of weight during pregnancy which is the cause of the increasing birth weights notes Robert Lustig, MD, pediatric endocrinoligist from the University of California, San Francisco in the 7-part video series called “The Skinny on Obesity” (Episode 5).
Pregnant mothers gaining more weight
Pregnant mothers gaining more weight translates into more fat cells produced in babies
“Birth weights have been going up worldwide over the last 25 years, and we know mother’s weight gain during pregnancy has also been going up and it translates into… baby’s fat stores,” Lustig notes.
“The fat cells like to get filled, [and so, as soon as the baby is born,] they’re hungry.
“And we see these kids calling for food at age 2 months… 3 months… and the parents don’t know where this came from, and it’s because they were programmed to do so.”
