    The prevelance of severe obesity, that is having a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more which is roughly being 100 pounds overweight, and that of morbid obesity, that is having a BMI of 50 or more which is roughly being 175 pounds or more overweight, has increased faster than that of any other weight group according to a new study from the RAND corporation.     Prevelance of BMI of 40 more

    The prevelance of a BMI of 40 or more has increased by 50 percent in the past 5 years, from 2000 to 2005, increasing from 2.2 percent of U.S. adults to 3.1 percent.

     

    BMI of 50 more

    Prevelance of BMI of 50 more

    The prevelance of a BMI of 50 or more has increased by 75 percent from 2000 to 2005, increasing from 0.27 percent of U.S. adults to 0.42 percent.

     

    BMI of 30 more

    Prevelance of BMI of 30 more

    This compares to an increase of 24 percent for obesity overall, that is having a BMI of 30 or more, which has increased from 20.7 percent in 2000 to 24.6 percent in 2005.
