Dietary counseling plus attending weekly Weight Watchers meetings causes more weight loss than dietary counseling or meetings alone. Women given counseling and attending meetings lost 20.9 pounds after a year compared to 17.6 pounds for those given counseling alone, and 5.9 pounds for those attending meetings alone compared to a weight gain of 2.4 pounds in the control group.
The study involved 48 obese breast cancer survivors were randomly divided into four groups and were followed for one year.
The researchers suggest that losing weight may be beneficial for breast cancer survivors.
“Because insulin resistance and high blood leptin levels [which are associated with obesity] are associated with breast cancer, losing weight to improve these parameters may reduce the risk of recurrence [of breast cancer],” the researchers concluded.
