EIGHTY MORBIDLY OBESE PATIENTS lost an average of 75.7 pounds after having their stomach's banded with an adjustable silicone gastric band.

The average starting weight was 293 pounds, with weight loss ranging from 14.3 to 145.9 pounds.

One year after banding food intake was reduced by approximately 65 percent, falling from 2843 calories per day to 1003.

The percentage intake of fat/carbohydrate/protein was similar before and after banding (35-40/40-45/20).

Reports of vomiting frequency (0-5 incidents per month, 5-20 per month, or 20+ per month) were similar three months (56 percent, 32 percent, and 12 percent) and one year after surgery (65 percent, 23 percent, and 12 percent).

Binge eaters reported more vomiting than non-binge eaters.

Patients who experienced more frequent vomiting lost more weight than those with less frequent vomiting (losing 55 percent of excess weight vs 45 percent).
