Adolescent lost 21.8 pounds in three months on a low-carbohydrate diet compared to 10.8 pounds on a low-fat diet according to a recent study. Low-Carb Diet
Less than 20 grams of carbs per day for first two weeks, then no more than 40 grams
The low-carbohydrate group were instructed to eat less than 20 grams of carbohydrates for the first 2 weeks, and then no more than 40 grams per day for the next 10 weeks.
Low-Fat Diet
Low-fat group told to limit fat to 30% of calories
The low-fat group were instructed to eat no more than 30 percent of their calories as fat.
“The [low-carbohydrate] diet appears to be an effective method for short-term weight loss in overweight adolescents and does not harm the lipid profile,” the authors of the study concluded.
