People assigned to consume 16-ounces of water before meals in addition to eating a low-calorie diet lost an average of 15.5 lbs in 3 months compared to 11 lbs in non-water drinkers according to a study from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, USA.

The study included 48 adults aged 55-75 years, divided into two groups.

One group drank 2 cups of water prior to their meals and the other did not.

All of the subjects ate a low-calorie diet during the study.

It is possible to drink too much water, a situation that can lead to a rare, but serious, condition known as water intoxication, Professor Brenda Davy, a coauthor of the study, pointed out.
