The great placebo scandal

It turns out that placebos used in some (most?) drug trials are not inert substances.
Instead they contain active ingredients which cause similar adverse events in the placebo group as the drug group.
There is no regulation on placebos notes Dr. Malcolm Kendrick.
Maryanne Demasi, Ph.D. has written about this.

Dr. Malcolm Kendrick has also written about this as well.

Dr. Kendrick points out that one statin study reported myalgia (muscle pain) in 0.6% of the placebo group, while another statin study reported myalgia (muscle pain) in 12.1% of the placebo group — a 20-fold difference.
How could this be unless the placebo contained ingredients that caused this.
As Dr. Kendrick writes, the database of drug trials can no longer be trusted.
