In 1986, professor and research scientist, Richard Moore, MD, PhD, showed in his book "The K Factor: Reversing and Preventing High Blood Pressure Without Drugs", that 95% of the cases of hypertension are due to a low ratio of potassium to sodium in the American diet.
“We did not emphasize it, but since you can't repair a dietary deficiency with a synthetic chemical [a drug] this clearly indicated that drugs are not the answer for hypertension," Dr. Moore noted.
Dr. Moore also notes that back in the 1980's, the largest blood pressure drug study to-date at that time, which included "17,000 people over a 5-year period, demonstrated that lowering blood pressure with drugs had zero effect on over-all mortality!"
This is an excerpt from a letter by Richard Moore, MD, PhD dated August 31, 2009.
Richard Moore, MD, PhD on how a drug company paid his publisher for a book about using drugs for blood pressure to compete with his book “The K Factor” (1986) about using potassium for high blood pressure.
The K Factor Published in 1986The K Factor Showed 95% of high blood pressure is caused by too much sodium and too little potassium
“In 1986, a physiologist at the University of Vermont Medical School and myself got Macmillan to publish [our book] “The K Factor: Reversing and Preventing High Blood Pressure Without Drugs” a book which decisively showed that 95% of the cases of hypertension are due to a low ratio of potassium to sodium in the American diet.
Drugs Can Fix a Dietary Deficiency
You can’t repair a potassium deficiency by giving a blood pressure medicine
“We did not emphasize it, but since you can’t repair a dietary deficiency with a synthetic chemical [a drug] this clearly indicated that drugs are not the answer for hypertension.
“Macmillan gave us a $50,000 advance and made The K Factor number two in their priority list for 1986 (second only to Margaret Truman’s book about her father).
“In Publisher’s Weekly, [the publisher, Macmillan] also stated their intention to spend $50,000 on advertising.
“They sent me to a few coaching sessions for being on TV and then had me do a warm-up tour of five medium cities including Dallas, Ft. Worth and Cleveland where they got me onto several radio and TV interviews.
“In those 5 cities, they sold a bit over 14,000 copies of The K Factor in three weeks.
“This would project to near one million copies nationally.
The Publisher Stopped Promoting the Book
The publisher cancelled the book tour
“Then, suddenly, Macmillan cancelled the major tour they had planned for me.
“I spent my share of the advance traveling to Florida where I was able to get interviewed on every major TV station.
Bookstores Could Not Get Copies of the Book
Bookstores could not get copies of his book
“About 3 weeks before going, we notified all the bookstores in each town… so they could stock up on copies of The K Factor.
“After each radio or TV interview, I visited those bookstores to see how sales were going.
“Every store told me they had been unable to get copies of the book from Macmillan [the publisher].
“When I approached Macmillan, they said there must be some problem [and] claimed that they still had, as required by our contract, a few thousand copies in their warehouse.
Book about Blood Pressure Drugs Published
The Publisher Published a Book about Blood Pressure Drugs
“A few months later, I ran across a new book published by Macmillan that claimed that drugs were the answer to hypertension.
Largest Blood Pressure Drug Study
Largest study of blood pressure drugs found NO decrease in the risk of death
“This book was clearly propaganda [by the drug companies] as it ignored the largest study of antihypertensive drugs ever done.
“This study of 17,000 people over a 5 year period demonstrated that lowering blood pressure with drugs had zero effect on over-all mortality!
Conversation Recorded
Dr. Moore recorded a conversation with his publisher
“So wearing a hidden recording device – a N.Y. judge advised me that this was legal – I confronted the person in charge at Macmillan about this pro-drug book and the fact bookstores couldn’t get copies of [my book] The K Factor and challenged him to put the authors of the pro-drug book and myself on the Donohue show for debate.
[The Donahue show was a talk show with Phil Donahue.]
“That wouldn’t be necessary, he replied.
“He told me the name of the drug company that, after publication of The K Factor, had asked Macmillan to quickly find someone to quickly write a pro-drug book.
“This book was never publicized, but was the means whereby money exchanged hands between the drug company and our publisher.
“I have recorded on tape all details except the amount of money.
About Dr. Moore
About Dr. Moore
Dr. Moore’s received his M.D. from Indiana University, and his Ph.D. in biophysics from Purdue University.
Starting in 1963, Dr. Moore spent 40 years as a college professor and research scientist teaching and researching cellular biophysics.
Dr. Moore’s research group research group discovered that insulin regulates the activity of the mechanism that exchanges potassium for sodium in live cells.
Dr. Moore’s group also discovered that, connected with this, insulin elevates the pH inside cells.
This research and that of others then led to insights in how our dietary imbalance between potassium and sodium cause hypertension and other diseases.
“Since recognizing the critical importance of the dietary ratio of potassium-to-sodium (in 1983), I have been trying to educate the public about this issue primarily by writing books.”
Dr. Moore is the author of several books including “The High Blood Pressure Solution”.
Dr. Moore is the also co-author of “The Salt Solution”.
This book discusses how an imbalance of potassium and sodium not only affects:
• stroke
• hypertension
... but also
how it affects:
• osteoporosis
• stomach cancer
• asthma
• kidney disease
