Shift workers, that is those working outside the hours of 8 AM to 5 PM, lost less weight following laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass weight loss surgery according to an analysis by researchers at Stanford University's School of Medicine in Stanford, California, USA. Weight Loss

Weight loss: 57% of excess weight vs 77% after one year

Three months after surgery, shift workers had lost 30 percent of their excess weight versus 44 percent for those working normal hours.

After six months, the percent of excess weight that had been lost was 46 percent versus 61 percent.

After one year, the loss of excess weight was 57 percent for shift workers compared to 77 percent for others.

Conclusion: Altered sleep or sleep quality may affect weight loss

“The potential for altered sleep physiology, reduced quantity of sleep, altered hormonal balance, increased tendency to disordered eating, and poorer quality of food intake, are all possible [reasons] for sub-standard weight loss outcomes in shift workers undergoing bariatric surgery,” the authors concluded.
