"[T]he sun has a dramatic effect on blood pressure," wrote Zane Kime, MD in his wonderful book, "Sunlight Could Save Your Life" by Zane Kime, MD (1980, p. 67-69.)
Sun bathing lowers blood pressure 6/8 points according to one study he notes. People with hypertension
Blood pressure dropped 15/20 points in those with hypertension
Reductions in blood pressure were 15/20 mm Hg in those with high blood pressure.
Largest Drops in Blood Pressure
Some had blood pressure dropped 40/20 points
Some patients had drops in blood pressure as much as 40/20 mm Hg.
Duration of this Effect
The drop in blood pressure dropped 5-6 days
Th effect lasted up to 5-6 days.
52-year-old Male normalized blood pressure with no drugs
Dr. Kime also describes a 52-year-old male patient who had severe high blood pressure, and still had elevated blood pressure even though he was on blood pressure drugs.
After several months of sunbathing, his blood pressure dropped to 120/70 mm Hg without any drugs.
90% of cases of high blood pressure have no identifiable cause
He also points out that 90% of cases of high blood pressure have no apparent cause. (They refer to this as essential hypertension.)
He points out that primitive people who lived outdoors had almost no hypertension.
(I imagine it is more related to diet, being that we used to consume much more potassium, more bicarbonate, less sodium and less chloride, however, sun exposure might also have played a role.)
Only half as much hypertension in nudists
He also notes that the Maryland Heart Association found that nudists had only half as much hypertension as the national average.
