Topamax (topiramate) in addition to a low-calorie caused an average weight loss of 15-17 percent after ten months compared 8.9 percent for those given a placebo according to study headed by Arne Astrup from Denmark. Weight loss: 15.4% with 96 mg per day vs 16.5% with 192 mg vs 8.9% with placebo
Subjects given 96 mg of Topamax (topiramate) per day lost an average of 15.4 percent of their body weight compared to 16.5 percent for those given 192 mg per day and 8.9 percent for those given a placebo.
Subjects: 561 people who lost at least 8% on low-calorie diet
The study started out with 701 obese people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30-50 who were 18- to 75-years-old. Everyone was put on a low-calorie diet for two months.
After these two months on a low-calorie diet, approximately 561 (80 percent) lost at least 8 percent of their body weight.
561 people randomized to 96 mg, 192 mg or a placebo
These people were randomized to receive either 96 mg of Topamax (topiramate) per day, 192 mg of Topamax (topiramate) per day, or a placebo.
Generally well tolerated
Topamax (topiramate) was generally well tolerated.
Conclusion: Topamax causes significant weight loss beyond that of a low-calorie diet
“... [Topamax (topiramate)] was generally well tolerated, and subjects maintained weight loss initially achieved by a low-calorie diet-and produced additional clinically significant weight loss beyond that achieved by a low-calorie diet,” the researchers concluded.
