Topmax reduces binge eating and causes weight loss of 9.9 lbs

Topmax (topiramate) slightly reduces binge eating and causes an average weight loss of 9.9 pounds in binge eaters according to a study from researchers at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in Cincinnati, Ohio. Weight Loss
Weight Loss: -9.9 lbs vs +0.4 lbs
Binge eaters who were given Topamax (topiramate) lost an average of 9.9 pounds versus a weight gain of 0.4 pounds for those given a placebo.
5 fewer bingeing episodes per week vs 3.4 fewer
Those given Topmax had 5 fewer binge eating episodes per week compared to 3.4 fewer episodes for those given a placebo.
Bingeing in Remission
Bingeing elminated in 58% of patients vs 29%
Topmax eliminated binge eating in 58 percent of patients versus 29 percent who were given placebo.
Side Effects: Skin sensations, upper respiratory tract infection, drowsiness, and nausea
The most common side effects with Topmax were paresthesia (unusual skin sensations), upper respiratory tract infection, somnolence (drowsiness), and nausea.
