"In my opinion, every diabetic patient seen in my practice has suffered hypothyroidism," notes Mark Starr, MD author of the wonderful book Hypothyroidism Type 2: The Epidemic.

He also notes that giving diabetic patients with Type 2 hypothyroidism, which is NOT detected by blood tests, prevents the complications from diabetes.

New Cases of Diabetes Extremely Rare Among Dr. Barnes’s Patients

“Dr. Barnes [Broda Barnes, MD, PhD] believed diabetes was due in large part to hypothyroidism,” writes Dr. Starr in Chapter 4 titled “Diabetes” of his book.

“New cases of diabetes were extremely rare among his large group of patients being treated for hypothyroidism.

“He thought the recurrent infections and impaired immune, hormonal, and internal organ functions the hypothyroid suffered from resulted in diabetes as well as a myriad other chronic illnesses.”

Accelerated Atherosclerosis

Diabetics suffer accelerated atherosclerosis identical to that associated with hypothyroidism

Later, Dr. Starr continues by saying:

“He [Broda Barnes, MD, PhD] also predicted the incidence of diabetes would balloon, along with the increased incidence and severity of hypothyroidism.”

“Most people do not realize that almost all the complications that result from diabetes are due to hardening of the arteries or atherosclerosis.

“These complications include blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, gangrene, and nerve damage.

“Diabetics suffer accelerated atherosclerosis identical to that associated with hypothyroidism.”

Diabetic Patients Given Desiccated Thyroid Protected From Complications

Dr. Starr then writes:

“While new cases of diabetes were very rare among Dr. Barnes’ patients who were being treated for hypothyroidism, a significant number of patients with diabetes sought his help.

“After many years of practice, he finally realized that none of his patients with diabetes had developed any of the typical and more advanced complications from their illness.

“Dr. Barnes researched old medical literature in an attempt to find out if there were any other reports to support these findings.

“There was a study that had been ignored since 1954.

“It was entitled ‘Coexistence of Hypothyroidism with Diabetes Mellitus’ by Crosby D. Eaton M.D.

“The study included several hundred diabetic patients of all ages who were treated for years.

“Dr. Eaton realized the vast majority of his diabetic patients also suffered hypothyroidism.

“He administered desiccated thyroid hormones with no adverse affect upon their diabetic control.

“He reported a vastly reduced incidence of complications related to diabetes as well as the elimination of the symptoms associated with hypothyroidism.”

Dr. Barnes Evidence Ignored

Dr. Barnes was ignored by mainstream medicine about the coexistence of diabetes and hypothyroidism

Dr. Starr goes on to say:

“Dr. Barnes presented his research on the coexistence of diabetes and hypothyroidism at a 1971 American Medical Association meeting.

“He also met with prominent doctors at our nation’s most prestigious institutions.

“Unfortunately, he found no sympathetic ears, despite the wealth of evidence he had gathered from the autopsies, his own patients, and Dr. Eaton’s report.

“He pleaded for further studies, but none would be forthcoming.”

Dr. Starr then notes:

“In my opinion, every diabetic patient seen in my practice has suffered hypothyroidism.

“The family histories usually reveal the profound hereditary influence of hypothyroidism.”

Desiccated Thyroid vs Synthetic Thyroid Hormones

Type 2 Hypothyroidism : Blood levels of thyroid hormone and TSH are normal

Dr. Starr also notes that that desiccated thyroid (Armour) is much more effective than synthetic thyroid hormones.

Here is what he wrote on page 164.

“A recent book by Sanford Siegal, DO, MD, entitled ‘Is Your Thyroid Making You Fat’ lends additional credence to the thyroid epidemic.”

“Dr. Siegal specialized in weight loss.”

“He… asked if I would be… on his referral list… because I was one of only several hundred doctors who prescribed the medication.”

“In over 40 years of practice, Dr. Siegal found in treating thousands of patients that desiccated thyroid (Armour) was much more effective than synthetic thyroid hormones.”

“Dr. Zondek also reported the superior efficacy of desiccated thyroid over synthetic thyroid hormone in the treatment of the ‘obese form’ of hypothyroidism in his 1926 textbook, Diseases of the Endocrine Glands.”

“He had not changed his opinion by the time the forth edition was published in 1944.”

Type 1 vs Type 2 Hypothyroidism

Type 2 Hypothyroidism : Blood levels of thyroid hormone and TSH are normal

Type 2 hypothyroidism is different than Type 1 hypothyroidism, which is what most people are referring to when they say hypothyroidism.

With Type 2 hypothyroidism, blood levels of thyroid hormone and TSH are normal, however the body is resistant to it.

This is similar to the difference between Type 1 diabetes where the body fails to make enough insulin, and Type 2 diabetes, where the body makes enough insulin, but the body is resistant to it.

Blood Tests Do Not Detect Type 2 Hypothyroidism

Type 2 Hypothyroidism Cannot Be Detected with a Blood Test

With Type 2 hypothyroidism, because blood levels of thyroid hormone and TSH are normal, it is cannot be detected by a standard blood test for thyroid function.

“My research shows that many chronic illnesses including heart disease, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, mental illnesses, Alzheimer’s disease, and the explosion of childhood illnesses are largely attributable to Type 2 hypothyroidism,” writes Dr. Starr.

“Type 1 Hypothyroidism is defined as failure of the thyroid gland to produce sufficient amounts of necessary to maintain normal blood levels of those hormones and normal blood levels of the thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH).”

“Type 2 Hypothyroidism is defined as [a] resistance to thyroid hormones at the cellular level.”

“[In Type 2 hypothyroidism,] Normal amounts of thyroid hormones and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) are detected by the blood tests therefore, blood tests do not detect Type 2 hypothyroidism.”
