U.S. FDA approves over-the-counter sales of Alii (orlistat)

On Thursday, Feb 7th, 2007, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a low-dose version of orlistat capsules as an over-the-counter (OTC) weight loss aid for overweight adults. The drug will be produced by GlaxoSmithKline and called Alii. Dose
Dose : 60 mg three times per day with meals
The capsules will contain 60 mg of orlistat compared to 120 mg with the prescription version, Xenical, and can be taken up to three times per day with meals.
Side Effects : Loose stools
“The most common side effect of the product is a change in bowel habits, which may include loose stools,” the FDA notes.
“Eating a low fat diet will reduce the likelihood of this side effect.”
Use : To be used by adults only
Alii is only to be used by “adults ages 18 years and older along with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet, and exercise program” according to the FDA.
Don’t use if you have had organ transplant
“[p]eople who have had an organ transplant should not take OTC orlistat because of possible drug interactions,” according to the FDA.
Check with your doctor if using blood thinners, have diabetes or thyroid disease
“In addition, anyone taking blood thinning medicines or being treated for diabetes or thyroid disease should consult a physician before using orlistat.”
Recommended to take multiple vitamin at bedtime
“Because of the possible loss of certain nutrients, it is recommended that people using orlistat should also take a multivitamin at bedtime,” the FDA press release notes.
Xenical approved in 1999
Xenical (orlistat) was approved by the FDA in 1999.
