    Vitamin C at a dose of 1000 mg per day reduced C-reactive protein by 25 percent in people with levels above 1.0 mg per deciliter.

    This was as much as occurs with statin drugs used to lower cholesterol levels.

    Three-fourth of obese people (75 percent) had levels of C-reactive protein at or above 1.0 mg per deciliter.

    "In summary, treatment with vitamin C but not vitamin E significantly reduced CRP among individuals with CRP >/=1.0 mg/L," the researchers concluded.

    C-reactive protein is produced by the liver and by fat cells. Elevated levels of C-reactive protein are associated with an increased risk of heart attack and are a marker for inflammation in the body. Levels are elevated in obesity people because, as one researcher said, obesity is a chronic inflammatory state. REFERENCE

    I always check out your website for articles of interest before seeking information elsewhere.

    Your skills and research are very convincing and i was wondering if you could look at Linus Pauling mega dose Vit C and the acidity factor. (Linus Paauling was the only person ever to win two unshared Nobel prizes)

    I can't find clear research or reputable information that clarifies this dilemma. I understand that the body should be alkaline for better health, however vit C in mega dose will cause the body to be acidic.
    some information out there state that apparently Linus Pauling may have mixed Bicarb Soda with Vit C to make it more alkaline however other information say that Bicarb Soda will destroy Vit C. so this makes it difficult to come to a reasonable conclusion with the opposing information.
    Any clarity you can shed on this would be greatly appreciated.

    You are correct about Linus Pauling.

    Pauling mixed ascorbic acid (vitamin C) with sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to neutralize the acid.

    Some great articles on potassium, bicarbonate, sodium and chloride note that humans used to get:

    - a lot more potassium

    - a lot more bicarbonate

    - a lot less sodium

    - a lot less chloride

    Therefore, I want to increase my intake of potassium and bicarbonate rather than sodium or chloride.

    Starting in 2000 -- 11 years ago -- I started taking 2000 mg of potassium in the form of potassium bicarbonate.

    It lowered my blood pressure by about 20 points, from roughly 140 to 120 mm Hg systolic.

    In the past few years, I have been mixing vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) with the potassium bicarbonate to buffer it.

    Potassium bicarbonate makes the body more alkaline and has all kinds of health benefits.

    A safer way for most people to do this is to drink 20 ounces of Low Sodium V8 Juice per day which contains a total of 2000 mg of potassium.


    If I remember correctly, Pauling started out taking 6000 mg / 6 grams of vitamin C per day.

    Later he increased it to 12,000 mg per day.

    And then later, he increased it to 18,000 mg per day.

    If someone took that much vitamin C, they would need to find other ways to buffer the acid other than just potassium bicarbonate because it would be too much potassium.

    Some also like mineral ascorbates -- magnesium ascorbate, potassium ascorbate, calcium ascorbate, etc.


    I will be posting some stuff that Pauling wrote and vitamin C and diseases.

    some information indicates Sodium bicarbonate would destroy 1/3 of the Vit C. I suppose if this was true than Pauling's 18,000 mg per day wouldn't be so bad and maybe that is why he took that much? I wonder what amounts of bicarbonate sodium he used in proportion to Vit C as this is what Pauling took and as you mention, at those levels Potassium bicarbonate wouldn't suit.

    I have many friends with blood pressure problems and i will certainly let them know about Potassium bicarbonate, great information.

    I have recently purchased 5 kilo of Vit C for 5 family members but haven't yet resolved the sodium bicarbonate factor to share with them.

    by the way, how much Vit C have you been taking over the last few years and have you found a difference, or additional benefit to blood pressure when compared to only potassium bicarbonate? I suspect a much greater improvement as Vit C was tested in lab with animals who were fed high fat food and only one given vit c. the one with vit c had clear arteries and the other not. I think the artery plaque adds to blood pressure.     I've never heard this.

    I am sure that Linus Pauling would have known this if this were the case.

    In one of his articles, he talked about blood levels of vitamin C after taking a large of dose of vitamin C.


    I don't know the amount of of sodium bicarbonate that Pauling used.

    It would be easy to figure out.

    Simply put 1/4 teaspoon of vitamin C in water.

    Then slowly add sodium bicarbonate.

    Add 1/8 teaspoon.

    After it stops fizzing, add another 1/8 teaspoon.

    Do this until there is no fizzing when you add the sodium bicarbonate.

    This means that all of the acid has been neutralized.

    My guess is that it take a small amount of sodium bicarbonate to neutralize the acid.


    I take 1000 mg, 5-6 times per day.

    So a total of 5000-6000 mg per day / 5-6 grams.

    No, I have not noticed any further effect on my blood pressure.

    My blood pressure has been the same for the past 11 years, since 2000, when I started taking potassium bicarbonate.
